BUCKEYE LAKE -  A 12-year-old boy is at Nationwide Children's Hospital after being hit by a truck Wednesday evening.

The child, who is a student at Lakewood Middle School, was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Jared Myers. The juvenile, who was on a scooter, and the truck were both traveling east on Walnut Road in Buckeye Lake.

"The pickup truck attempted to pass the juvenile," Myers said. "The juvenile was off the road and the juvenile attempted to cross the road and was struck by the pickup truck."

The child was hit near the intersection of Walnut and Hilton roads and the Buckeye Lake Fire Department responded to the scene at about 6:31 p.m.

The child, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Mount Carmel East in Columbus before being transported to Nationwide Children's, where he remains in "pretty serious condition," Myers said.

Lakewood Local Schools Superintendent Mary Kay Andrews said the thoughts and prayers of the district's faculty, staff and students go out to the child and his family.

"Right now our students are writing notes of comfort and support," Andrews said.

The district also has counselors available if students need to talk to someone, she said.
