MANSFIELD - Several people came together to rescue a dog from a house fire on Seminole Avenue on Monday evening, according to a Mansfield fire report.

The Mansfield Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire in the 1000 block of Seminole Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire on one side of the house.

Before firefighters arrived, a neighbor, described as the cousin of the owner in the report, tried to enter the house to rescue the dog, along with another neighbor. An off-duty Springfield Township firefighter saw the smoke and also tried to rescue the dog.

Dustin Crane, who lives in the house, said he was at his sister's house and wasn't home when the fire started.

His cousin, who lives next door, called him.

“He told me my house was on fire," Crane said. "By the time I got there, the fire department already had it out."

Crane, 29, said when he first got to his house, he didn't think his dog made it. But after firefighters went through the house after the fire was out, they found 4-year-old Batman, a terrier, in a bedroom.

“He made it to the back bedroom and shut the door," said Crane, a welder/fabricator who works in the Cleveland area.

Firefighters got Batman out and resuscitated him, and he's doing fine now, Crane said.

The last unit left the scene around 9 p.m. Monday, about two-and-a-half hours after the fire was reported. No was injured, according to the report.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the report.

Crane said all the contents of his house are gone, but the structure of it is fine, so he's planning to repair it.

For now, he's staying with family and friends. He said he's not in need of anything.

“No one died, and I still have my dog, so it’s OK," Crane said. "Just stuff."
