Managing Slip and Fall Injuries

Philadelphia slip and fall lawyers assist victims injured in a fall due to hazardous conditions.Community organizations or businesses, whether they are public or private, have a duty to prevent accidents on and around their properties. Regular inspections of the property will be beneficial to owners and people who regularly come to the property, and this should become a regular practice for all community organizations and businesses.

Over 25,000 slip and fall injuries occur every day, costing the United States approximately $60 billion annually. Some of the areas that are the most cause for concern when considering the possibility for slip and fall accidents are stairs, outdoor surfaces, and areas that collect moisture.

Keeping Stairs Safe

Stairs are always a potential hazard and there should be proper signage to warn potential visitors who may not be able to manage the stairs. Stairs should always be maintained and free of damage and cracks. If there are structural issues with the stairs, they should be corrected immediately. Warn visitors with signs and barriers to inform them that the stairs are not currently accessible. Handrails should also be installed to help visitors manage stairs. Stairs should also be free of torn carpet or loose tile, and tripping hazards should not be present on the stairs.

Potential Problems in Outdoor Areas

Outdoor surfaces must be kept clean of debris from trees or newly cut grass.   Sidewalks must be inspected for cracks or changes in elevation, which can occur over time. If outdoor surfaces develop divots or dips, these should be replaced as well. If snow or ice is present, it should be removed immediately, and salt should be put down to prevent further slippery surfaces that could form because of cold weather and moisture.

Managing Moisture on Floors

Moisture can create many different types of hazards. Places like pool decks, locker rooms, entryways, and kitchen areas are prone to moisture collection.  Mopping is the best way to remove moisture, but visitors must also be warned with signage for the safest practices. Special kitchen or gym mats may work best in kitchens and locker rooms. Mats musts be used properly and in the right areas. Areas with mats should be on level surfaces so the mats do not counteract any intended safety purpose and create tripping hazards.
