Can Blepharoplasty Change Vision?

Blepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is used to enhance the appearance of the skin around the eyes. During this procedure, drooping eyelids are lifted, helping expose a larger portion of the eye to produce a more alert, rested, and youthful look. Patients whose vision has been obscured by drooping eyelids may experience an improvement in eyesight following blepharoplasty, though this improvement is more superficial than it is medical.

Eyelid surgery will not change your vision in the same way as LASIK, but it’s not designed to address vision issues. Instead, this cosmetic procedure is designed to:

  • Reduce puffiness and bags underneath the eyes
  • Eliminate dark and discolored circles around the eyes
  • Remove excess skin from the upper eyelids
  • Restore a balanced and appealing look to the midface

Blepharoplasty is not designed to address crow’s feet, those lines on the sides of the eyes that pop when you smile or squint. Those can be handed through complementary treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic. Nashua cosmetic surgeon Dr. George Chatson also offers additional surgical treatments, such as brow lift, that can be used to gently smooth the skin next to and above the eyes.

Is Eyelid Surgery Safe?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure and, as such, it comes with risks such as infection, excessive bleeding, scarring, and vision disruptions. The latter is rare, but can occur when eyelid surgery is performed incorrectly or carelessly. This makes your choice of plastic surgeon all the more important.

Dr. George Chatson is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over three decades of experience.
