'Vox Lux' Trailer: Natalie Portman Plays A Rising Pop Star

Natalie Portman, one of the most accomplished actresses of her generation, will now enter the world of music. Previously, Portman has played a mentally ill ballerina and a First Lady. Now, she will play a musician in the upcoming drama “Vox Lux” directed by Brady Corbet.

Admittedly, Natalie Portman has dabbled into her musical talents before. Portman has proven her killer rap skills on “Saturday Night Live” as many of us know. But now, she will venture into the pop genre. In “Vox Lux,” she plays a pop star named Celeste and the film follows her rise to superstardom. “Vox Lux” begins in 1999 and spans from then to present day.

Given how Portman has a tendency to pick interesting material, that should be a confidence builder. Also, should this film come out this year, it would make 2018 a banner year for the actress. Earlier this year, she headlined the sci-fi horror flick “Annihilation” which garnered positive reviews. Plus, who knows, maybe this could put her in the hunt for Oscar Nomination #3?

Even though the film seems like a showcase for Portman, she still has a terrific cast surrounding her. The supporting cast includes Jude Law, Stacy Martin, Jennifer Ehle, and Raffey Cassidy who plays young Celeste. As an added bonus, the film will have original songs composed by singer-songwriter Sia.

As for Brady Corbet, the writer and director, we’ll see what he has up his sleeve as well. His debut film “The Childhood Of A Leader” received positive notices out of the 2015 Venice Film Festival. But whether he gets the sophomore slump is up in the air. Judging by the trailer, “Vox Lux” seems like it could be more than a standard “rise and fall of a pop star” story.  With the talent involved, “Vox Lux” could hit all the right notes.

“Vox Lux” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
