American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) captured the MaxPreps Cup for the top high school sports program in the nation based in large part to the performance of its girls sports teams during the spring.
The Patriots won state titles in girls tennis and softball and finished second in girls track, allowing them to finish with the No. 1 girls sports program in the nation, according to the MaxPreps Cup rankings formula. The Patriots edged Houston (Germantown, Tenn.) by close to 100 points (1,065-983). Meanwhile Porter-Gaud (Charleston, S.C.) finished tied with Kinkaid (Houston) tied for third place with 941 points. Xavier College Prep (Phoenix), the No. 1 girls program after the winter sports season, dropped to No. 5.
American Heritage also finished as the top medium school rankings, finished No. 7 on the Top 25 boys athletic program list and No. 8 on the Top 25 spring sports programs list.
St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) easily finished as the nation's top boys sports program. With 1,701 points, St. Xavier outdistanced No. 2 Carmel (Ind.) by nearly 500 points.
Westminster (Atlanta) finished the year as the top small schools program and it also had the top spring sports program with 1,097 of its 1,834 total points coming during the final third of the school year.
Following are the five MaxPreps Cup lists with previous rankings from the winter sports season also noted. Medium schools are those that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students while small schools have under 1,000 students.
The MaxPreps Cup rankings are determined by awarding points for state championships and runner-up finishes based on the type of sport, the size of the state, the enrollment classification of the sport and the total number of teams competing in that classification. Points are also awarded for appearing in national rankings for various sports.
Archbishop Mitty finished 10th in the MaxPreps Cup girls overall standings.
