DRI Confiscates Smuggled Gold Disguised as Paste at Airport

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): After a brief pause, gold smuggling has been reported to be on the rise in India. Smugglers have been inventing newer techniques to escape the customs check at airports. In the latest of the reported series of smuggling incidents in the country, a passenger has been arrested for smuggling gold disguised as paste.

The incident was reported at the Hyderabad Airport. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials intercepted a passenger who had landed at the airport via a domestic SpiceJet flight early morning Sunday. Upon examination, the officials seized two packages of paste in his hand baggage. Upon suspicion, the packets were sent for detailed investigation and tests. Later, tests confirmed that the paste had gold content of 1.12 kilograms, worth nearly INR 35 lakhs. The passenger admitted that the gold was originally smuggled from Colombo to be handed over to an employee at airport telecom kiosk, who in turn was supposed to hand over the same to a person outside the airport.

Days prior to this incident, an Indian passenger was arrested at Bengaluru Airport for trying to bypass customs officers with nearly 400 grams of gold. He had tried to smuggle gold by concealing them inside chocolate and chewing gum wrappers.

On the same day, eight foreigners, including a man and seven women from Sudan and Saudi Arabia were arrested for allegedly smuggling nearly 5 kilograms of gold worth INR 5 crore at the Mumbai International Airport. Also, two Indian nationals were arrested for attempting to smuggle gold in gas stoves and MCBs.

In another incident, the customs officials at Pune Airport had recovered six gold biscuits worth nearly INR 22 lakhs, concealed in the oxygen mask panel of the rear lavatory of a SpiceJet flight from Dubai. The seized gold, weighing nearly 700 grams, was found double wrapped with yellow cloth and black adhesive tape.
