Recycling Paper Collection Surged 163% to Topple 127 Tons

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): For the third consecutive year, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) has demonstrated its commitment to environment by launching paper recycling campaign. The campaign in 2018 recorded significant surge in recycling collection volumes. A total of 127,763 kilograms of paper were collected for recycling in 2018, as compared with the total collection of 48,526 kilogram during the previous year. In general, the paper recycling market has recorded remarkable growth in recent years.

According to Habiba Al Mar’ashi, chairperson of EEG, the 163% surge in collections over the previous year is attributed to the rigorous environmental awareness campaigns carried out across the UAE and the increased adoption of responsible and sustainable practices by the community. The collections during the “Recycle Reforest Repeat” campaign during the period between June 18 and July 18 resulted in savings of 494 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. It has also led to savings of 840 MWh of energy and 403 cubic metre of landfill space. It has also played an important role in educating communities on the need to recycle.

The project witnessed participation by 26 schools, 33 government and private sector entities and 157 students across the UAE. The project had set a target to be accomplished by the participating member or entity. The target set for paper collection was a minimum of 750 kilograms for corporate and academic entities and 350 kilograms for families. The campaign had strategically targeted collection of paper.

EEG thanked all the participants for joining hands with its environmental action and called upon the community to make such recycling campaigns a regular practice all year round, which in turn will help the society to achieve its overall sustainability development goals.

The champions of the project will be awarded during an event scheduled to be held in the Grand Millennium Hotel, Dubai on 15th of September this year.
