Google Chromecast’s Backdrop is getting a big overhaul

Google is updating the Backdrop settings on Chromecast to add some new features and is giving it a new name: Ambient Mode.

The major changes

First, the different sources are clubbed into three different categories: Photo frame, Art gallery, and Experimental. As of now, you can only select one category, so you can’t mix your photo album and art photos.

The third category, Experimental, shows pictures from Facebook and Flickr. Along with that, it has a low-bandwidth mode that displays pictures that are only stored on the Chromecast to reduce your data consumption.

Google News, however, has been removed temporarily, but they say they are fine-tuning the feature, and it will be back soon.

The minor changes

  1. The weather temperature unit picker will now allow you to pick both units.
  2. The slideshow speed now allows you to pick an actual time period in which the ambient images change.
  3. You can now hide or show the time according to your preference.
  4. You can now choose whether or not you want to show the personal photo data (the owner’s name and the album name).
