Former FBI Director James Comey lambasted President Donald Trump Monday for reportedly siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin over U.S. intelligence services during a joint press conference in Helsinki.

“This was the day an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country,” Comey wrote on Twitter.

“Patriots need to stand up and reject the behavior of this president,” Comey, continued.

Trump faced backlash following the press conference with Putin after he criticized the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election. (RELATED: Comey Calls For Stricter Gun Regulations, Accuses NRA Of Lying To America)

“The probe is a disaster for our country. I think it’s kept us separated. There was no collusion at all — Everybody knows it,” Trump said during the conference.

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,” Trump added.
