The deputy director of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site will join the Presidential History Book Club at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums via Skype.

Club to discuss 'The Bully Pulpit' 

FREMONT –The deputy director of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site will join the Presidential History Book Club at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums via Skype for discussion at its meeting July 25.

Paul J. Zwirecki, deputy director of the Roosevelt site in Buffalo, N.Y., will discuss “The Bully Pulpit” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

The event is from noon to 1 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Admission is free.

All are invited, and participants do not need to read the book to attend.

Zwirecki has a Ph.D. in history from the University at Buffalo. He has taught history and interdisciplinary studies courses at UB, SUNY Fredonia and Medaille College. He also serves on the Town of Amherst, New York, Historic Preservation Commission.

The Presidential History Book Club meets monthly and reads books about the American presidency. Participation is free. For a schedule of events, visit rbhayes.org.

The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. The Port Clinton office of the Salvation Army is in need of bellringers for Christmas in July.

Salvation Army eyes 'Christmas in July'

PORT CLINTON - The Salvation Army needs volunteers to ring the bell for the “Christmas in July” Red Kettle Campaign.  This community event will take place 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday . There will be several kettle sites set up with bell ringing volunteers needed at each site. The sites involved are: Friendship Food Stores (both Port Clinton and Catawba locations) and four Put-in-Bay locations. All proceeds will help support The Port Clinton Salvation Army Service Unit.

Ida Rupp friends prepare for sale

PORT CLINTON - The Friends of Ida Rupp Public Library are ccepting donations of gently used books. The criteria for accepting used books at all the library locations: The books must be clean, free off dust and mildew, have bindings intact and are not missing pages or the pages are not yellowed or torn. 

The group also accept magazines that are intact and are dated within the last two years. The Friends group also accepts DVDs and CDs that are playable, current and in cases.

Over the next few weeks volunteers will be sorting and organizing books for the sale.  Volunteers to help in the book sale should contact, Lynne Kroeger: 419-341-7220.

The annual book sale of 3,000 to 5,000 books will start from 5 to 7 p.m.  Aug. 1 for Friends members (memberships are available at the door). On  Aug. 2 is the public sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The sale continues 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3; on the final public sale day, books can be purchased individually, or one can buy all the books that can fit into a paper bag for $5. 

Pricing of books are: Better hardback books $2, regular hardbacks $1, paperbacks 50 cents and children’s books 25 cents. 

All proceeds go to the library to support the Summer Reading program, Lecturers and Performers, Special Projects and Movie Licensing for all three locations:  (Ida Rupp in Port Clinton;  Erie Islands on Put in Bay and the newest branch, Marblehead Peninsula in Marblehead).  

Drowns to visit The Bellevue Hospital

BELLEVUE -  The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) will host an upcoming Drown’s Garden Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Drown’s Market of Green Springs will bring produce to the hospital as a part of the hospital’s efforts to support a healthy lifestyle.

The Garden Market will offer a wide variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables and is open to the public.
