Fremont City Schools drops Pay to Play

FREMONT - The Fremont City School Board unanimously approved the repeal of its Pay to Participate program for all extra-curricular activities. 

The board acted at its July 9 meeting noting it recognized the burden on families and is committed to removing the barriers for students to participate. 

The district has worked on cost saving efforts in other areas to make this possible.  The changes will implemented immediately for the 2018-19 school year.

Free sandwich for veterans at the fair

OAK HARBOR - The Ottawa County Veterans Service Office and Boy Scouts 316 Oak Harbor will provide a free sandwich and drink to Ottawa County Veterans on Veterans Day at the Ottawa County Fair on Saturday July 21.

Veterans are asked to speak with a veterans service office member or commission member at the entrance gate to receive their coupon. Veterans Service Office staff and commission staff will be on hand between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information call 419-898-2089.

Toledo Civil War author to speak Sunday

TIFFIN - Author Dan Masters of Toledo will speak on “Alfred E. Lee – 11th Corp at Chancellorsville” at the Sunday meeting of the Johnsons Island Civil War Roundtable. Masters has researched the Civil War for over 18 years with a focus on Ohio infantry regiments and documenting the thousands of letters contained in Ohio’s newspapers during the Civil War. His books will be there for sale.

JICWRT meets at TJ Willies, Tiffin, at 5 p.m. and the meeting follows at 7 p.m.  The public is invited.

St. Mark to host ice cream social

FREMONT - St. Mark Lutheran Church, 902 East State St., will host its 24th annual ice cream social at 5 to 7 p.m. July 24, 2018.  

This year’s social will again benefit the Sandusky County Food Pantry.  Those attending the social may “pay” for their ice cream with items of non-perishable food, which will be taken to the food pantry. The menu includes sandwiches, baked beans, homemade potato and macaroni salads, and homemade pie and desserts.
