CLARENCE TWP. - An Eaton Rapids man is in jail after Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputies said he broke into the home of his former girlfriend and sexually assaulted her.

Calhoun County deputies were called at 7:43 a.m. Friday to a home in Clarence Township on the county's east side.

Detective Sgt. Steve Hinkley said deputies said the 30-year-old man, who has not yet been arraigned, had been living at the home until two weeks ago and then during the night hid his car behind a barn and was watching the woman through the window before forcing it open and entering.

The woman, 28, said she woke to find the man standing near her bed. The man broke the woman's phone and sexually assaulted her and then fled. The woman stopped a passing motorist and called 911.

The man was found by the Jackson County Sheriff Department deputies and returned to the Calhoun County Jail on charges of home invasion and sexual assault.
