Ottawa County Fair's week of fun kicks off Monday
SALEM TOWNSHIP - The Ottawa County Fair returns for its 53rd year and a week of fun, animals, music and more.
The fair begins bright and early Monday morning with various 4-H and FFA judging, but the opening ceremony is scheduled for noon, followed by harness racing at 5 p.m. and the “Grand Parade” at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, in addition to more judging and harness racing, there will be the “Ace of Clubs” hog calling contest in the FirstEnergy Pavilion at 5 p.m., followed by a cornhole tournament at 6:30 p.m. and the annual talent show at 8 p.m.
Senior Citizens’ Day is on Wednesday, which will feature free blood sugar and blood pressure screenings from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m., respectively, as well as coffee, juice, donuts, lunch and ice cream for seniors in the Damschroder Hall.
On Thursday, the midway will host a chainsaw carving demo featuring 2017 world champion Dennis Beach at 6 p.m., followed by the Broken Horn Rodeo at 7:30 p.m. in the grandstands.
Friday will be highlighted by the demolition derby at 7:30 p.m. and a live performance from north coast Ohio band Rutherford County at 9 p.m. in the FirstEnergy Pavilion. A news crew from the BBC will also be visiting for their series, “Ask America.”
The fair’s Veterans’ Day is on Saturday, which begins with an antique tractor pull at 8 a.m., then the Veterans opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. That evening, the Ottawa County farmers “Pulling for the Fair” will host the Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association circuit.
Sunday wraps up the fair with kids’ fishing derbies at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., the Ottawa County Bluegrass Band performing at 11:30 a.m., musician George Daily at 1 p.m., and the annual pie eating contest at 2 p.m.
General admission for the fair is $5, with seven-day passes available for $25.
