DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) – Derby, Kansas police confirmed Tuesday that the skeleton found in a Derby business Monday morning is human.

Eliseo Flores was pulling down a ceiling in a former plumbing business in the 100 block of West Market when he found what looked like a coffin in the building’s attic.

“I tried to remove all the ceiling and the old insulation,” says Flores. “And I went to the corner and I saw a coffin almost like four foot long and almost a foot wide so I was curious.”

He found bones inside.

“But when I opened it, it was a head, a human head, and bones. Everything. It’s in good condition,” says Flores. “Very weird.”

Flores called his boss. His boss called police. And Derby Police Chief Robert Lee confirms the remains are human.

“It may have been in the attic for some time,” says Chief Lee. “The Derby police with the help of the Sedgwick County Coroner’s office are working with experts in an attempt to determine the age and gender.”

Chief Lee says his department has talked to previous businesses located inside the building, but, so far, they have not been able to solve the mystery. The chief says they don’t yet know where the remains came from, how old they are, or who may have left the coffin or why.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to please call the Derby Police Department at 316-788-1557 or call 911.
