Are their any hidden gems

Recommended Posts

After seeing that Norwich look to be getting over £20m for selling a player they sign last season for only £3m and Coventry will get 10% of the deal for a sell on clause.

Are we looking at the whole FFP wrongly should we be looking for gems from league 1 and 2 who we can develop into better players then in a few season sell them on at a big profit - you only need one or two to improve to basically cover any shortfall in FFP that we might have, not to mention these player may even push the club forward.

So you the knowledge of owls talk which players currently in league 1 and 2 should we be taking a punt on.

Or don’t pay a fee, develop players from the U-18 & U-23 sides, bring them into the first team and then maybe make a huge profit without the initial outlay

Looks like we are starting to do that.. probably not through choice mind..

Will we get a tribunal for George Hirst and/or Sean Clare?

Could get a few bob from them if so

They will go to tribunal yes if they don't agree deals with us. The tribunal fee's are usually very low though, so don't bank on getting a lot. That's why i couldn't understand why we didn't negotiate with the various clubs who were in for Hirst and sell him on before getting to this stage as he was never going to sign a new deal anyway...

So you want us to become a selling club?

Not sure that'll go down too well with the majority.

Need to find a reasonable middle ground.

Whilst I admire DC's decision not to sell the family jewels the complete lack of outgoings led to a lot of stale wage earners on the books and prevented the likes of Hirst getting a game. Need to judge each sale and purchase on their merits

Every club in football is a selling club but its about developing talent and enabling the team to move froward from the sale.

Spurs signed Bale from Southampton for £7m sold him for £77m does that make them a selling club or bloody smart.

Every player has a price, Liverpool would sell Salah if they got over £180m and we would sell Forestieri if we got £20m.

Ive no idea what the conversation is about by the way because I haven’t bothered to read it

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek: I'm not averse to us developing youngsters and selling or bringing in low cost unknowns to sell for a profit a year later, provided that it's part of a process of improving the overall team.

That said, Southampton are probably the most successful at developing talent and selling for a profit. Has it done them any good? Hypothetical, but it's kept them in the Prem but with all their stars they might have actually won something. Spurs too, had they been able to keep Bale. (I think was more Bale wanting to go than Spurs wanting to profit).

But back on my original comment. Imagine the meltdown on here if, having lost Clare and Hirst for a pittance we sold Thorniley for, say, £1m and Dawson for whatever.

Southampton just have a very good catchment area until recently with the improvement of Bournemouth they had pretty much the whole south west of the country to pick from.

You may have noticed in recent years their production line seems to have dried up somewhat.

Sorry I don’t agree with this, the Saints got Bale from the Cardiff area and I believe Shaw was in London and had to travel down to training.

And they are still developing young players it may just be that they haven’t currently got a world class player like Bale or Walcott, but that’s what happens in football.

Bale, Walcott, Shaw, years gone by Shearer, Lesaux, Le Tissier, Flowers etc.

They have produced a lot of players but very few have stayed after the bigger teams come calling but the sales of the likes of Shaw have paid for their new stadium so it shows that a team can move forward from selling smart. The deal had crowds of 16-18,000 St Mary's regularly has 30,000+

The catchment area was they didn't have too many Premiership competition for others and their own young talent.

We are terrible at selling players, we usually get it wrong and end up selling players when we need vs when they’re in demand.

Selling players to maximize asset value and reinvest is a necessary part of any fottball club strategy

But considerably better than when we are buying players
