Americans outraged over the Trump administration’s barbaric family separation policy took to the streets in dozens of cities all over the U.S. on Thursday, including Los Angeles, where, as home to the largest population of undocumented immigrants in the nation, it hit particularly close to the heart.
“I think we are fighting for the heart and soul of America,” teacher Yolanda Varela Gonzalez said at the rally, one of the dozens that were part of the Families Belong Together campaign. Gonzalez and hundreds of others eventually marched to a detention center in downtown L.A., “where people chanted “You aren't alone” in Spanish. Detainees used flashlights to signal to those below.”
"We have to say enough is enough. This stops now," protester Hector said.
In Texas, where the administration is also waging a courtroom battle to kill the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and leave undocumented immigrant youth vulnerable to deportation, one demonstrator said she decided to help organize the Austin rally “after reading about the family-separation issue from stories posted on Twitter and Facebook.”
“I read an account of a mother whose 4-year-old son had been taken from her and about her experience of being ‘processed’ with yellow wristbands with numbers on it to identify those families that were separated so they could be easily identified,” Micaela Eller said. “It was a gut-wrenching account, and as a mother, it broke my heart.”
“I believe we are at a crossroads as a nation,” she continued, “and we have a choice to make.”
