Here are the seniors nominated for The Herald’s 2018 Kristi Bartz Memorial Girls Athlete of the Year Award. You can vote for your choice below.
The Herald’s 2018 Boys and Girls High School Athletes of the Year, selected by the sports staff, will be announced later this month. The winners of the online voting also will be recognized at that time.
Nominations were made by the schools.
Voting closes at 6 p.m. Monday, June 18.
Kelsey Bassett, Granite Falls
Bassett won individual state titles in two different sports. Last November, she claimed the 2A diving state crown just two months after taking up the sport (she dove for Archbishop Murphy because Granite Falls doesn’t have a swim and dive team). Last month, she won the 2A pole vault state title in her third season of competing in the sport. Bassett maintains a 3.75 grade-point average as a full-time Running Start student and member of the Ocean Research College Academy at Everett Community College. She volunteers at the Sarvey Wildlife Center in Arlington, where she helps take care of animals. She will continue her pole vault career at Carroll College in Montana.
Peyton Brown, Arlington
Brown, a four-year letter winner in basketball and team captain each of the past two seasons, earned first-team All-Wesco 3A North basketball honors. She was named the Snohomish County Basketball Officials Association’s girls player of the year and was selected to play in one of the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s senior all-state games. Brown holds a 3.84 grade-point average and was named one of the Rotary Club of Arlington’s students of the quarter in January. She will continue her basketball career at Central Washington University.
Jamie Copeland, Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace
Copeland placed seventh in the discus and eighth in the shot put at the 1B state track and field meet. She was the school’s student body president and senior class valedictorian. She will continue her track and field career at Whitworth University.
Ally de la Cruz, Kamiak
de la Cruz, a three-sport athlete and 12-letter winner, was a captain on Kamiak’s swimming, wrestling and track and field teams. A four-time state placer in wrestling, she won the girls 155-pound state title in 2017 and finished her career with three top-three state medals. She also placed 13th in the pole vault at last month’s 4A state track and field meet and recently was awarded a $1,000 Smart Choice Scholarship by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. de la Cruz maintained a 3.91 grade-point average while taking numerous advanced placement and honors classes. She also was selected to be a commencement speaker at Kamiak’s graduation ceremony.
Caitlyn Daniel, Cascade
Daniel served as captain of the Bruins’ soccer team and was a four-year letterwinner in soccer and a three-year letterwinner in basketball. She has taken multiple advanced placement and honors classes.
Megan Dorney, Archbishop Murphy
Dorney was a three-sport athlete in basketball, cross country and track. She received first-team All-Cascade Conference honors in basketball after helping the Wildcats reach the 2A state title game. She also qualified for the 2A state cross country meet this past fall. Dorney maintained a 3.88 grade-point average and provided 25 hours of community service this year to the TOPSoccer program for young athletes with disabilities.
Abby Douglas, Lynnwood
Douglas was a three-sport athlete who played on the Lynnwood volleyball, girls basketball and girls golf teams. She maintained a 4.0 grade-point average.
Jadyn Edwards, Jackson
Edwards recorded 18 goals and 17 assists while leading the Jackson girls soccer team to the Wesco 4A title and 4A state quarterfinals. She was named The Herald’s Girls Soccer Player of the Year and maintained a 3.95 grade-point average while taking several advanced placement and honors classes. She will continue her soccer career at the University of New Mexico.
Roz Gillie, Snohomish
Gillie was a four-year letter winner in both volleyball and track and field. She earned first-team All-Wesco 3A honors as a middle blocker in volleyball and helped the Panthers to an eighth-place finish in the 3A state tournament. She maintains a 3.97 grade-point average.
Kylee Griffen, Lake Stevens
Griffen averaged 20.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and three assists per game while leading the Lake Stevens girls basketball team to the Wesco 4A title, a district crown and a 4A Hardwood Classic berth. She was The Herald’s Girls Basketball Player of the Year and an Associated Press 4A first-team all-state selection. Griffen, a four-year letter winner, tied the single-game school record with 42 points this past season and is the program’s all-time leading scorer. She maintains a nearly 4.0 grade-point average and was named one of the school’s students of the month. She will continue her basketball career at Gonzaga University.
Megan Gordon, Everett
Gordon won a Dwayne Lane Athletic Scholarship, which is awarded annually to two student-athletes in the Everett School District. She earned four varsity letters in softball and three letters in soccer. She batted .431 with four home runs, five triples and five doubles in softball this spring, earning first-team All-Wesco 3A North honors. She maintains a 3.4 grade-point average while taking many advanced placement and honors classes. Gordon also volunteers for Special Olympics and Badges for Baseball. She will continue her softball career at Colorado Christian University.
Savannah Hastings, Monroe
Hastings captained the Monroe cross country team and was a member of the track and field team. She qualified for the 4A state cross country meet and finished her career with four varsity letters in cross country and three letters in track and field. Hastings maintained a 4.0 grade-point average and is one of the school’s valedictorians. She also created and organized a five-kilometer race, with all proceeds benefitting multiple sclerosis research.
Kolby Heggenes, South Whidbey
Heggenes earned 12 varsity letters as a three-sport athlete in golf, volleyball and basketball. She placed third in the 1A/2B/1B state golf tournament last month, leading the Falcons to a fourth-place team finish. In volleyball, she earned first-team All-Cascade Conference honors at outside hitter and captained South Whidbey to the 1A state tournament. Heggenes also was a captain on the girls basketball team. She maintained a 3.47 grade-point average.
Hannah Jones, Marysville Getchell
Jones was a captain on both the Marysville Getchell girls soccer and girls tennis teams. She helped the Chargers’ girls soccer team advance to the 3A state tournament, marking the first state berth in a team sport in the school’s eight-year history. She maintained a 3.65 grade-point average and will graduate with her associate’s degree from Everett Community College. She will continue her soccer career at Pacific Lutheran University.
Kaitlin Larson, Stanwood
Larson was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and soccer — serving as a captain on both teams — and earned three letters in track and field. She received first-team All-Wesco 3A honors in basketball, averaging 12 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She helped lead the Stanwood girls basketball team to a district title and a fifth-place trophy at the 3A state tournament — the highest state finish in program history. Larson also was a second-team All-Wesco 3A goalkeeper in soccer. She maintained a 4.0 grade-point average and will continue her basketball career at Westmont College in California.
Elle Mason, King’s
Mason was a first-team All-Cascade Conference libero who helped lead the King’s volleyball team to the 1A state title. She also is a strong student.
Brooke Monteith, Darrington
Monteith was a three-year letter winner in both volleyball and basketball. She was a captain on the Darrington volleyball team.
Yukino Parle, Edmonds-Woodway
Parle capped her decorated prep distance-running career last month by winning the 3,200 meters and placing second in the 1,600 meters at the 3A state track and field meet. She also placed second in the 3A state cross country meet this past November, leading the Warriors to a second-place team finish. She earned six top-two state medals during her track and cross country careers, including a pair of state titles in the 3,200 meters. She also was a captain and four-year letter winner on both teams. Parle, who maintains a 3.64 grade-point average, is a member of the school’s wind ensemble and was selected to all-state band. She also was a Link Crew member and volunteers at all-comers track meets during the summer. She will continue her distance-running career at Boise State University.
Suzy Pace, Mariner
Pace qualified for the 4A state track and field meet in three events, placing sixth in the 300-meter hurdles, ninth in the high jump and 15th in the 100 hurdles. She also took third place in the state heptathlon. Pace holds school records in each of her three state-qualifying events and the heptathlon. She also ran cross country for the Marauders and maintained a 3.72 grade-point average while taking several Advanced Placement and honors classes. She will continue her track and field career with a partial scholarship to Washington State University.
Jelly Perry, Lakewood
Perry was a standout three-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball and softball. The 5-foot-7 guard averaged 17.4 points, 15.5 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game in basketball, earning 2A first-team all-state and first-team Herald All-Area honors. She also was a second-team All-Northwest Conference selection in both volleyball and softball.
Katie Taylor, Shorewood
Taylor was a three-sport athlete in swimming, basketball and tennis. She captained both the Shorewood girls basketball and girls tennis teams. She also is a top student and will continue her basketball career in college.
Elaine Townley, Cedarcrest
Townley was a four-year letter winner in both softball and basketball. She earned first-team All-Cascade Conference softball honors this spring after batting .493 with one triple and seven doubles. She will continue her softball career at Hillsdale College in Michigan.
Emma Tumbleson, Cedar Park Christian-Bothell
Tumbleson qualified for the final round of the 1A/2B/1B state golf tournament and was a member of the Cedar Park Christian-Bothell cross country team. She also is a class valedictorian, keyboardist in the school’s jazz band and a member of the school’s revelation choir.
Elena Willems, Glacier Peak
Willems earned a pair of medals at last month’s 4A state track and field meet, placing third in the 800 meters and helping the Grizzlies’ 4×400 relay team to a third-place finish. She also qualified for the 4A state cross country meet this past fall. She maintains a 3.51 grade-point average.
Jazz Zenk, Mountlake Terrace
Zenk was a first-team Herald All-Area selection in softball. She batted .512 with seven home runs, two triples and 11 doubles this spring.
