2.5 Million Ballots Still Need To Be Counted In California

Officials in each county have 30 days following an election to count all ballots.

CALIFORNIA -- Some races may have been called in California but the state still has an estimated 2.5 million ballots to count. The Secretary of State office included a breakdown of the number of uncounted ballots by each county in its latest report.

So far, more than 4 million ballots have been counted from the June 5 primary election, according to the Secretary of State office.

County elections officials have up to 30 days following Election Day to count all ballots before they must report their final results to the state by July 6. The Secretary of State will then certify the results to Gov. Jerry Brown by July 13.

“County elections officials are hard at work processing and counting ballots,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “Ensuring the accuracy and the integrity of the vote count is critical to our democracy. State law gives county elections officials up to 30 days after Election Day to complete vote counting, auditing, and certification. In California, we work to ensure every ballot is counted properly and every ballot is accounted for."

The county with the highest number of uncounted ballots is Los Angeles where an estimated 500,000 ballots still need to be tallied, according to the Secretary of State office.

The county is the same region that sparked controversy on Election Day after registered voters reported not being on the rosters when they went to polling stations.

The news prompted Padilla's office to request information from Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan.
