Four local prep athletes earned Athlete of the Week honors from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association in recent weeks.
Iyanla Pennington, Jackson softball (week of May 21-26): Pennington led the Timberwolves to the Class 4A state title, allowing just three runs and 10 hits in 26 innings pitched at the state tournament. The junior right-hander struck out 16 batters in a three-hit shutout of Puyallup in the quarterfinals, then tossed a no-hitter while blanking Camas in the semifinals.
Tanner Boe, Mountlake Terrace baseball (week of May 21-26): Boe pitched 5 2/3 strong innings in the Hawks’ 7-3 win over West Valley-Spokane in the Class 2A state semifinals. The left-handed senior struck out 10 batters and allowed three unearned runs and four hits.
Jazzelle Caparas, Mariner girls golf (week of May 14-19): Caparas, a junior, shot a two-round total of 152 to claim the Class 4A Northwest District tournament title.
Riley Mae Swanson, Lakewood softball (week of May 14-19): Swanson, a freshman, tossed 278 pitches in a doubleheader as the Cougars clinched a state berth with back-to-back wins over Lynden and Cedarcrest in the Class 2A Northwest District tournament.
