Not all kids can sit still for movies.

The Gateway Film Center at Ohio State University in Columbus, 1550 North High Street, is hoping to provide answers for families of children with sensory issues by offering free monthly movies through a partnership with The Ohio State University's Nisonger Center on its Sensory Friendly Film series since 2014.

The sensory-friendly movies include a lower volume on movies, brighter lights and a "no-shush" policy.

"It's extremely fulfilling to have the opportunity to provide this experience for our community through this partnership," said Scott Vezdos, who serves as Director of Communications for Gateway Film Center. "Our families are grateful for the opportunity to engage in the community in a meaningful and supportive way, in an environment where children with autism (or other related intellectual/developmental disability that would make typical participation difficult); can be themselves and no one will judge. They can relax and be themselves. It’s refreshing for families to be able to go to a movie or other event in public where you know people will be understanding and accommodating. We see joy, relief, acceptance, and a sense of being welcomed."

Vezdos said the series is part of the Center's mission of being inclusive

"As a whole we should do more to create (or promote existing) sensory friendly experiences such as this to help all community members engage in all aspects of community life in a warm and welcoming environment," he said. "A big part of our mission is being loving and inclusive. When there are barriers to inclusion, we evolve so we can bring more people together."
