BUCYRUS — Poppy Days continue today at various locations in Bucyrus.

Members of American Legion Post 181 will be at Walmart, Carle's Bratwurst and Kroger from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on both days.

The event started in June 1919 and has been continued every year since. The flower, which grew wild on Flanders Field in World War I, is now used to represent the sacrifices made by past soldiers.

Queen Elizabeth II places a wreath of poppies at the new Flanders Field Memorial outside the Guards Chapel on Nov. 6, 2014, in London, England.

Sue Adams, sergeant at arms for the women's auxiliary at the post, said she became interested in Poppy Days and her current position after learning from her mentor, Francis Ruth.

"It's very rewarding. The money is never wasted," she said.

She said the flowers are handmade by three veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, who get paid a small wage to make the crepe paper flowers. Those who would like a poppy can give a small donation of any amount.

Poppy flowers stand in a meadow in Offenbach near Frankfurt, Germany, on May 23, 2018.

"Lots of people empty their change," she said.

All of the money raised from the event goes toward helping veterans in Crawford County. She said they use the money for bingo nights, small birthday gifts and other activities.

Friday was designated Poppy Day in Bucyrus by Mayor Jeff Reser

Rodney Millington, a Vietnam army veteran and is the district sergeant of arms, simply gestured at his hat when asked why he enjoyed volunteering for Poppy Days.

"We're coming up on the 100th anniversary, so we're trying to drum up interest," Adams said.
