Video: Top 10 Plays of the Year See the absolute best from the recently completed high school sports season.
When considering the life of Saint Francis Xavier, it wouldn't be a stretch to call the man an overachiever. After all, during his 16th Century mission to India and the Far East, he is reported to have baptized over 700,000 people. He is considered one of the greatest saints in the Catholic faith.
A pair of schools named after the Catholic saint have also proven to be overachievers in their own right. According to the MaxPreps Cup standings, St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) is the top boys athletic program in the nation so far for the 2017-18 school year while Xavier College Prep (Phoenix) is considered the girls athletic program.
The MaxPreps Cup standings attempt to compare high school athletic programs by awarding points for state championships, runner-up finishes, and national rankings. Point totals are based on the size of state, the popularity of the sport, the enrollment level of competition and the number of teams competing in that level of competition.
St. Xavier, an all-boys school, has a 74-point lead over Carmel (Ind.), a coed school, when considering just the boys sports for each school. St. Xavier has 1,065 points while Carmel has 991.
Xavier College Prep has a much larger lead in the girls division. An all-girls school, Xavier College Prep leads La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.), a coed school, by 150 points when considering just girls sports. Xavier College Prep has 939 points to La Salle Academy's 789.
MaxPreps has also identified the top medium-sized schools, the top small schools and the top winter sports programs for 2017-18 after the completion of the Winter Sports season. Medium-sized schools are those that participate in enrollment division that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students. Similarly, small schools have less than 1,000 students.
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) is the top medium school, edging out fellow Florida school Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.) by 59 points — 1,219 to 1,160. The two schools are nearly 200 points ahead of the third-best school.
Haddonfield (N.J.) is easily the top small school with 1,302 points. That total is over 400 points higher than second-place Skutt Catholic (Neb.).
Carmel (Ind.) is the top Winter Sports program, scoring 675 points during that sports season alone. It edges out La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.) by 25 points.
