Bloom-Carroll area news: Memorial Day weekend activities

Memorial Day Weekend festivities kick off Sunday, at dusk in the village of Lithopolis. That is when Bloom Baptist Church will sponsor movie night on Columbus Street in the center of the village. "Despicable Me 3" is the movie that will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and participants are encouraged to bring a chair.

Monday, the Memorial Day Parade will step off from American Legion Post 677 on Smith Road in Bloom Township and proceed through Lithopolis where it will end at Lithopolis Cemetery where the Memorial Day Ceremony will take place.

This year’s Grand Marshall is John Waishnora. Waishnora spent two years with U.S. Marines. Basic training was in San Diego in 1968. He served 13 months in Vietnam with 3rd Marine Division. His duties were Fire Direction Control for field artillery. He returned from Vietnam in 1969 and was stationed at Camp LeJune with 2nd Marine Division. He has been a member of American Legion Post 677 for 12 years, Commander of Post for 6 years. He is retired from City of Columbus with 34 years of service. He is married Vickie Waishnora, has two children, and seven grandchildren.

The annual fish fry will be held beginning at 11 a.m. at Bloom Township Fire Station 551 on Market Street.

C-Town Cruisers will host the 2018 Car Show on Columbus Street. Registration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The entry fee is  $15 per vehicle. Awards will be presented at 4:30 p.m. Awards will be handed out for Fish Fry Favorite, Military Vehicle, Mayor’s Choice, and Firefighter’s Choice. This is an open show. There will be no saved spots or tents permitted on the streets.

Graduation

The commencement ceremony for Bloom-Carroll High School was held on May 20 in a packed gymnasium of family and friends. A total of 174 graduates turned their tassels Sunday following the Board of Education's presentation of diplomas. An total of 133 merit-scholarships valued at $3,509,338 in scholarship money was awarded to 58 graduates.

Lunch for teachers

On Friday, members of Lithopolis United Methodist Church  will be providing lunch for the teachers and staff of the Bloom Carroll Intermediate School. They are in need of volunteers to help prepare and serve food as members seek to express appreciation and continue to build relationships in the community. For more information, call 614-837-2230.
