Parents in Beckenham are breathing a sigh of relief after a “massive” tree branch fell inches away from where children were stood.
A scout troop were enjoying the sunshine on Tuesday (May 22) when a tree branch came crashing down at Beckenham's Croydon Road Recreation Ground.
Emergency services were called and a young member of The 13th Penge & Beckenham North received medical attention for cuts and bruises.
A bike was also damaged during the scare.
One parent said: “When I returned to pick up my son from the park, I thought 'that huge tree branch wasn't there before'. It was massive, the size of a small tree in itself. The children had carried on with their fun activities after the incident, but they were all clearly excited.
“Everyone is very relieved no-one was seriously injured. I have to hand it to the group leaders, they handled the unusual situation very well, ensuring everyone was physically and emotionally alright after what was quite a shock for all.”
Another parent said the loud crack caused passers-by to come into the park to see what happened.
The 13th Penge & Beckenham North are celebrating their milestone 100 year anniversary this year.
