The busiest weekend of the high school sports year is upon us.
Spring sports state championships take place this week, with golf on Tuesday and Wednesday, track and field on Thursday through Saturday, and baseball, softball, tennis and boys soccer on Saturday and Sunday. It makes for a crazy weekend for the sports department.
In one way it’s an odd year for Snohomish County, in that there are no local boys soccer teams that made the state semifinals. I’m not sure that’s happened in all the years I’ve worked at the Herald.
However, there are still several softball and baseball teams who have a chance of claiming a state championship this weekend. Here’s who’s still alive (including record, league and district placings, 2017 state performance):
SOFTBALL
4A (in Spokane)
Jackson, 21-1, first in Wesco 4A, first at district, 2-2 at state last year
Monroe, 18-6, third in Wesco 4A, second at district, third at state last year
3A (in Lacey)
Snohomish, 21-1, first in Wesco 3A North, first at district, 3-2 at state last year
Edmonds-Woodway, 15-8, first in Wesco 3A South, second at district, 1-2 at state last year
Marysville Pilchuck, 20-4, second in Wesco 3A North, third at district, did not qualify for state last year
2A (in Selah)
Lakewood, 17-6, seventh in NWC, second at district, did not qualify for state last year
BASEBALL
3A (in Pasco)
Edmonds-Woodway, 16-9, second in Wesco 3A South, second at district, fourth at state last year
2A (in Yakima)
Mountlake Terrace, 19-8, third in Wesco 3A South, third at district, did not qualify for state last year
