In the modern day, technology is rapidly advancing and having a big impact on our lifestyles, relationships and homes.

With this in mind, can we predict what our homes of the future will look like?

AXA Insurance asked 3,000 members of the British public what they think homes will be like in five, 10 and 20 years’ time and created an infographic revealing the results.

Many believe that homes are becoming increasingly multi-purpose, with a quarter of people now viewing them as places of work as well as leisure. As the years go by, people predict smart technology will become more prevalent in homes. Sustainability and green living will also become more popular.

Take a look at the infographic below to see how homes might change in the next two decades...

Homes of today

Many people now view their homes as a place for leisure and work, with more homeworkers today than ever. But it seems that working on laptops is the most common practice as most don't have a designated office space.

According to the study, 64 per cent of participants think that even more people will be working from home in the future.

Homes in five years’ time

When you consider that the iPhone only came out less than 11 years ago, it’s not surprising that 26 per cent of respondents believe that UK homes will include smart technology such as Hive and Alexa in the next five years.

Other smart technology thought to be more popular in homes in five years' time include smart TVs and charging points for electric cars.

Homes in 10 years’ time

Within a decade, it is predicted that sustainability will be a key aspect of homes. Almost 20 per cent think properties will be made mostly of sustainable materials, such as solar panels and flood resistant technology. Driverless cars are predicted to be bigger in 10 years' time as well.

Homes in 20 years’ time

UK homes will house multi-generational families much more than now in 20 years' time, according to the respondents. Also predicted is that more people will live in properties and homes will decrease in size.

'Throughout the decades AXA has seen a number of changes in the way people live their lives and the homes they reside in,' Gareth Howell, managing director at AXA Insurance, said.

'Today more than ever, people are starting to use their homes for multiple purposes and are relying more heavily on new technology, and this is set to continue. In the next five, 10 and 20 years we expect homes to change once again, but into what is a conversation we all need to have.'
