Rajon Rondo hates "Playoff Rondo," requests new nickname
Back when he was with the Boston Celtics, former Kentucky point guard Rajon Rondo had a knack for turning it on when the lights were the brightest, specifically in the NBA Playoffs. Ever since, whether it was with multiple triple-doubles, clutch shots, or ridiculous assist numbers, "Playoff Rondo" has almost always come to life.
But Rondo himself reportedly hates the nickname.
“I hate it,” Rondo told Marc Stein of the New York Times. "There's no such thing as 'Playoff Rondo.'"
According to the New Orleans Pelicans guard, his success has almost always correlated with the playing time and role his coaches have given him in the past.
“I’ve done what I’ve done in the past,” Rondo said. “I let my game speak for itself. I feel like, when I get a certain amount of minutes and when the coaches allow me to be me on the court, I’m Rondo. There’s no ‘Playoff Rondo.’ Ask any player. You’re only as good as your coach allows you to be.”
After making four All-Star teams, First-Team All-Defense, etc., his success comes well beyond the Playoffs alone. "If you look at my history, I don’t think you can be a four-time All-Star just from the playoffs. I must have done something in the regular season. ‘Playoff Rondo’, I think, is a myth. But I do love the big moments,” said Rondo. After he and former Wildcat big man Anthony Davis helped lead the Pelicans to a 4-0 sweep over the three-seed Portland Trail Blazers, he certainly didn't give fans a reason to stop using the nickname.
