Athletics' Sean Manaea throws no-hitter against Red Sox

Athletics pitcher Sean Manaea (55) celebrates with teammates after pitching a no-hitter against the Red Sox at Oakland Coliseum.

Oakland Athletics left-hander Sean Manaea tossed the first no-hitter of 2018, holding the red-hot Boston Red Sox without a hit in a 3-0 win for the A's on Saturday.

The Red Sox came into the game leading the majors in most offensive categories, including hits and runs scored. But they hit a major road block in Manaea, who was mostly dominant throughout. The third-year starter walked two and struck out 10 on 108 pitches.

“I didn’t even think about it until I looked up in the seventh or eighth,” Manaea said, “and I was like, ‘Oh my God, why is there still a zero on there?’”

Only three balls left the infield, including a pop fly to shallow left by Sandy Leon that was misplayed by A's shortstop Marcus Semien and ruled an error. Manaea had retired 14 consecutive batters before the fifth-inning play.

The closest call for Manaea came in the sixth inning, when Andrew Benintendi hit a slow tapper to first baseman Matt Olson and avoided Olson's tag to reach safely at first base. Or so it seemed. Umpires ruled Benintendi had gone out of the baseline when eluding Olson and the hit was taken off the board.

“So after that, my adrenaline started pumping a little bit again, and I really wanted to finish this thing out,” Manaea said.

After that it was smooth sailing for Manaea, who became the first A's pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Dallas Braden's perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010.

“I just telling myself, keep everything the same, and not let anything get too big for me,” Manaea said.

It also marked the first time the Red Sox were no hit since 1993, when Chris Bosio of the Seattle Mariners held them hitless at the Kingdome.
