BALTIMORE POLICE WERE ALREADY WORKING IN THE AREA WHEN AN OFFICER HEARD GUNFIRE COMING FROM THE ALLEY OFF OF THE 1700 BLOCK OF NORTH REGESTER STREET. >> THE OFFICER WAS ON REGESTER STREET, HERE’S THIS, AND RUNS TOWARDS THE VIOLENCE. WE CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT BAD GUYS EMBOLDENED, WHO AREN’T SCARED TO PULL THE TRIGGER. THE OFFICER WAS ON THE BLOCK RIGHT WHERE HE NEEDED TO BE, AND THEY STILL CARRIED OUT THIS ACT OF VIOLENCE. LISA: ORANGE CONES MARKED THE SHELL CASINGS IN THE STREET. A LADDER TRUCK WAS BROUGHT IN SO POLICE COULD GO ON THE ROOFTOP TO LOOK FOR EVIDENCE. POLICE COMMISSIONER DARRYL DE SOUSA SAYS THIS PAST WEEKEND HE HELD EMERGENCY MEETINGS TO ADDRESS THE CRIME SPIKE. HE SAYS THE CRIMES ARE NOT RANDOM. THEY KNOW THE PLAYERS, THE ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED, AND ARE GOING AFTER THEM. >> OUR DETECTIVES ARE UP THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT CONDUCTING WARRANT INITIATIVES. WE ARRESTED ONE PERSON WHO WAS WANTED FOR MURDER DURING THE INITIATIVE. LISA: THE STATISTICS POLICE ARE FACED WITH PAINT A GRIM PICTURE. SO FAR THIS YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN 83 HOMICIDES. FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, WE’VE ALREADY SEEN 25, AND FROM LAST THURSDAY TO TODAY THERE HAVE BEEN 15 HOMICIDES. BUT FOR THE FAMILIES OF VICTIMS, IT’S NOT ABOUT STATISTICS, BUT THE GUT-WRENCHING LOSS THAT LEAVES THEM INCONSOLABLE. POLICE SAY THAT THIS CRIME TOOK PLACE AT A BUSY TIME IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD. THERE WERE SEVERAL PEOPLE, A LOT OF PEOPLE, OUT, AND THEY BELIEVE SOMEONE SAW SOMETHING. THEY ARE ASKING THE PUBLIC TO BE IN TOUCH WITH THEM ABOUT THIS CRIME, AND OTHERS HAPPENING IN THE AREA.

A teenager has been arrested and charged in connection with a double shooting in east Baltimore that left a man dead.City police were already working in the area around 11:10 a.m. when an officer heard gunfire coming from an alley off of the 1700 block of North Regester Street. Officers found a 30-year-old man, Walter Baynes, and a 69-year-old man who had been shot. Baynes died at a hospital, and the 69-year-old man is being treated for his injuries. "The officer was on Regester Street, hears this and runs towards the violence. We continue to talk about bad guys who are emboldened, these bad guys who aren't scared to pull the trigger. The officer was on the block right, right where they needed to be, and they still carried out this act of violence," Baltimore police media relations Chief T.J. Smith said. Late Thursday evening, Smith tweeted that a suspect was in custody and murder charges were pending. Smith said an alert officer chased down the suspect shortly after the shooting.Police identified the suspect Friday as Eric Gilyard, 17. He has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree attempted murder and gun charges.Police said they recovered a semi-automatic handgun.Orange cones marked the shell casings in the street. A ladder truck was brought in so police could go on rooftops to look for evidence. Police Commissioner Darryl De Sousa said he held emergency meetings over the weekend to address the crime spike. He said the crimes are not random. He said police know the players, the organizations involved, and they are going after them."Our detectives were up through the night conducting a warrant initiatives over the last few days. We arrested a person wanted for murder during that initiative," Smith said. So far this year, there have been 83 homicides, 25 of which occurred in April.
