Prominent mixed martial arts reporter
Ariel Helwani reported Tuesday that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has been hired as the head wrestling coach at
Gilroy (Calif.).
"This opportunity is huge for me," Cormier told Helwani. "Wrestling has been the foundation for everything I've done. I'm excited to coach a great team in Gilroy and excited to give back to the town that has accepted me and my family so openly."
Cormier has a 20-1 record mixed martial arts record with wins over the likes of Dan Henderson, Anderson Silva and Frank Mir. He will attempt to win a title in a second weight class July 7 when he faces heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
A native of Louisiana, Cormier won three wrestling state titles at
Northside (Lafayette) and went on to compete at Oklahoma State before embarking on a mixed martial arts career.
Cormier is taking over a program ripe with tradition. The Mustangs have won 19 consecutive league titles, 16 consecutive section titles (20 in all since 1980) and have produced 10 individual state champions over the past 12 seasons.
In addition to competing in the octagon, Cormier is a frequent analyst and color commentator for UFC broadcasts.
Gilroy, Cormier's adopted hometown, is 30 miles south of San Jose.
