Kinross Gold Certified Under CORESafety System

Kinross is the eighth National Mining Association member company to complete each step of the process.

The National Mining Association recognized Kinross Gold Corporation on March 22 for receiving independent certification under its CORESafety® system. Kinross is the eighth NMA member company to complete each step of the process. "We congratulate Kinross on starting out 2018 with this noteworthy accomplishment in mine safety and health," said NMA CEO and President Hal Quinn. "Kinross' efforts have more than proven that putting people first is a true core value for the company, and it goes above and beyond to make sure every employee returns home safe and healthy every day."

On Jan. 2, 2018, NMA announced that companies participating in its CORESafety® system closed 2017 with zero fatalities.

"Kinross is very proud to have one of the best safety records in our industry, and we continuously work to maintain and strengthen our performance," said J. Paul Rollinson, Kinross Gold's president and CEO. "Mining responsibly is an imperative at Kinross, and being certified under CORESafety ensures best practices are implemented at our operations."

In 2011, the members of NMA came together to create CORESafety®, a risk-based safety management system whose objective is zero fatalities and a 50 percent reduction in mining's injury rate within five years of implementation. CORESafety® offers a management system approach to mine safety scalable for operations of all sizes. CORESafety certified companies are Cloud Peak Energy Resources, LLC; Coeur Mining; Dyno Nobel; Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold; Hecla Mining Company; Newmont Mining Corporation; Peabody Energy; and Kinross Gold.

Twenty companies are listed on the CORESafety website as CORESafety participants. The participants agree to commit to the CORESafety system; implement a functionally equivalent version of the CORESafety safety and health management system; submit to NMA annual self-assessments of progress toward implementation of the CORESafety safety and health management system; and, if the company elects to obtain or maintain CORESafety certification, complete a thorough third-party assessment of its safety and health management system to verify that it is functionally equivalent to CORESafety and submit the assessment report to NMA.
