For one of greatest upsets in NCAA tournament history UMBC coach Ryan Odom gets $10,000

For a priceless victory, UMBC men’s basketball coach Ryan Odom will get a bonus of  ...  $10,000.

UMBC Retrievers head coach Ryan Odom.

Like nearly every coaching contract, Odom’s deal contemplates the prospect of his team winning the national championship — but you have to start somewhere.

And for Odom, it started Friday night with a victory over top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Virginia — the first win by a No. 16 seed in the history of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Odom got a $7,500 bonus for the Retrievers winning the America East Conference tournament — their ticket into the NCAA field of 68.

The deal calls for another $7,500 for the team participating in the NCAA tournament.

And from there:

—$10,000 if the team advances to the round of 32.

—$10,000 more if it advances to the round of 16.

—$10,000 more if it advance to the round of eight.

—$20,000 more for reaching the Final Four.

—$20,000 more for reaching the championship game.

—$20,000 more for winning the national championship.

That’s a total of $90,000 for winning games in the NCAA tournament.

Or, $10,000 less than North Carolina coach Roy Williams gets if the Tar Heels advance to the round of 32.

Houston’s Kelvin Sampson is also set to receive a $100,000 bonus for the Cougars' first-round win, while Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton's bonus is $50,000. West Virginia's Bob Huggins is due $30,000.
