Video: Michael Porter Jr. is the MaxPreps 2016-17 Player of the Year
Watch versatile 6-10 guard shoot threes, rebound, dunk and most of all, win. Michael Porter Jr. is just getting started. At least in college. And with a snap of the finger — or one poor performance — it could be all over.
The 2016-17 MaxPreps National Player of the Year from
Nathan Hale (Seattle) missed nearly his entire freshman season at Missouri until last week.
He's played two games for the Tigers, but he has a chance to play six more in the NCAA Tournament. No. 8 seed Missouri opens West Regional action Thursday against Florida State.
Porter, a 6-foot-10 forward who averaged 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds a game for the No. 1 high school team in the country last year, played in two games thus far and is averaging just 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for the 20-12 Tigers.
Much of how he plays in the tournament might determine where he lands in the 2018 NBA draft. Most projections have him going anywhere from first to fifth.
In a one-on-one interview with MaxPreps host Chris Stonebraker at last season's McDonald's All-American Game, Porter said "This is what I was put on this earth to do."
Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr., shown here last season in high school, has a lot riding on his performance in March Madness.
