FREMONT - White shamrocks covered Sonny Workman from head to toe as he picked up his feet at a steady pace and rolled through Front Street.

It was the day before St. Patrick's Day, and Workman got an early start to the Irish holiday Friday afternoon by jogging through parts of Fremont in his emerald green running outfit complimented with dozens of shamrocks.

The St. Patrick's Day run has become an annual tradition for Workman, as he puts on his special holiday running gear and goes for three, sometimes four, miles.

Motorists waved at Workman as he ducked his head inside Viva Los Healthy to say a quick hello, then resumed running on Front Street.

"I do it just to make people laugh and smile and get people ready for St. Patrick's Day," Workman, a Fremont resident, said as he stopped for a second in front of Down Thyme Cafe.

A young woman interrupted the News-Messenger's interview with Workman so she could grab a photo of the self-described "Shamrock Man," who made the St. Patrick's Day run for the fifth time Friday.

Before he resumed his run, Workman said he purchased his running suit at morphsuits.com.

"It's real comfortable. It's just like running tights," Workman said.

Workman ran over the State Street bridge, took a left through downtown Fremont and took another left turn on Ewing Street toward the Miles Newton Bridge.

He crossed the bridge, went up Thompson Hill, headed toward Walsh Park and turned onto Nickel Street.
