Former Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland plans to sign a deal with the Carolina Panthers when free agency officially begins  Wednesday, said a person familiar with the negotiations.

It’s a three-year, $24 million deal that includes $11 million in guarantees.

The 26-year-old is a solid No. 2 corner, but it was clear that Breeland wanted to test the free agent market and the Redskins weren’t prepared to pay what he believed he was worth.

The former fourth-round pick stressed in a December interview that he is “a top corner in this league,” but he also acknowledged the organization already had invested a sizable amount at the cornerback position with Josh Norman’s five-year, $75 million deal. Still, Breeland believed, “if there’s a will, there’s a way. If they want it, they’ll make it happen.”

Washington, however, was prepared to move on from Breeland, who finished the season with 19 passes defensed and his first career pick-six in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I can live with whatever happens,” he said at the time. “I shouldn’t have to explain to anyone what I’m worth. The proof is in the pudding. I’ve got a body of work for the four years I’ve been here to back that statement up.”
