Doug Trainor has resigned as head coach of the Everett High School football team.
“I stepped back awhile back,” Trainor said in a text message to The Herald on Thursday. “(I) wanted to spend more time traveling. I’m in New Zealand right now.”
Trainor was the Seagulls’ coach for the past three seasons, posting a 17-13 record. Everett had won just three games combined in its previous three campaigns before Trainor’s arrival.
Everett posted a 7-3 record this past fall, losing a Week 10 Class 3A playoff contest to Garfield.
“We appreciate his service to the school and the community and the football program,” said Doug Plucker, the assistant principal in charge of athletics at Everett High School. “He and his staff did a great job. They really supported the kids. He was a valuable member of the Seagull community and will be missed.”
Trainor graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1990 and played junior-college football in California. He spent eight years as an assistant at Stanwood before taking head-coaching jobs at Ballard (five years), Bellingham (six years) and Stanwood (one year). He was an assistant coach at Squalicum for one year before accepting the Everett position.
Plucker said the school district hoped to have the job opening posted by the end of the week and would move forward with the hiring of a new coach “as soon as possible.”
