Major Power Outages In Newton Linger

A day after a historic storm hit the region many are still without power in Newton.

NEWTON, MA — The lights are still out in Newton for many who lost power during Friday's historic storm. As of Saturday at 2:30 p.m., there were 969 still without power in Newton, according to Eversource. At the height of the storm, more than 1,200 lost power in the city.

Statewide, more than 450,000 lost power at the height of the storm. Eversource said they're working to restore power but had no estimate on when that would be.

A large tree crashed into a home Friday afternoon crushing part of the roof and a car in the driveway, Newton Fire Department officials reported. By 6:20 p.m. more than 1,000 people were without power and many were also without phone service.

No one was injured when the tree fell, according to fire officials. but now crews are working to help remove the tree on Solon Street. Officials notified Eversource and police and fire are warning folks to report any downed wires they come across as multiple people are reporting tree limbs and power lines down around the Garden City as the storm geared up for even more blustery winds Friday afternoon.

At 8 a.m. police said a utility pole was down on Chestnut St near Gordon Rd. As of 12:30 p.m. police had still closed the road to through traffic there and on Fuller Street.

Eversource said as of 12:30 p.m. 793 customers were without power as of noon. A tree was hanging on a wire on Lewis Terrace, prompting police to block that road. Someone else called to report two polls had fallen over on Lantern Lane and wires were reportedly down on Beacon Street, too.

By 1 p.m. a tree was blocking Homer Street near the library.

Someone called to report a tree down across the road at Gould Road and Edgefield road around 12:50 p.m.
