Truck was on tracks despite gates when struck by Amtrak train: U.S. report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A garbage truck was on the tracks despite lowered safety gates when it was struck by a train carrying Republican lawmakers in a fatal crash last month in rural Virginia, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Wednesday.

Data from a camera mounted on the front of the chartered Amtrak train showed the gates were down at the crossing at the time of the crash, according to a preliminary NTSB report on the Jan. 31 accident.

The report added that “witnesses to the crash reported that the refuse truck entered the crossing after the gates were down.”  ...  More from Reuters

... According to the report, the crossing at Lanetown Road was equipped with advance warning signs, pavement markings, crossbuck signs, warning lights, bells and gates.

The train’s lead locomotive was equipped with a forward-facing track image camera. The camera showed that as the crossing came into view, the gates were down and the truck was on the grade crossing.  ... Daily Progress

@mountaineer - what's your gut on this one?  Any chance this was done on purpose?

From the beginning, I wondered why the truck driver - apparently a local fellow - would have stopped the truck on the tracks. It wasn't like no trains ever passed through. I won't adjust the foil hat yet, but it is very strange.

Yeah......... it makes no sense at all to me.

Especially if the gates were down.

VERY strange.

What's tin foil about it? A garbage truck pulled on to the tracks when all safety features were in effect to let people know a train was coming. They also didn't bail from the truck when they had the time to do so if the vehicle was disabled. This thing is wrong on all levels.

Good points, all.

Yeah, that's another thing. If you were in a vehicle on the train tracks (let's assume, for the sake of argument, it was stalled) and you saw/heard the warnings, why the heck wouldn't you jump out and run?

One guy in the truck survived.  I would hope someone would  have questioned him on this matter.

I thought maybe the driver was tying to beat the train.  Surely, he and the passenger would have seen it coming.  If the truck stalled, wouldn't they have just exited the vehicle?

I'd like to see this part of the report, too.
