The Cabrillo College men’s basketball team took its usual spot Monday among programs selected for the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California regional tournament.

This time, though, the Seahawks have some company.

For the first time since at least 2000, which is as far back as playoff records go on the CCCAA’s website, the Cabrillo women’s team also reached the postseason.

The women, who last week clinched a share of their first conference title since 1979, will begin their new chapter with the No. 12 seed in the NorCal regional. The Seahawks (20-4) will play at No. 5 Merced (24-5) in the first round Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner will play the victory between No. 13 Foothill (19-11) — the team Cabrillo split the conference title with — and No. 4 City College of San Francisco (24-4) on March 3. The higher seed will host.

The men tied Gavilan for the Coast Conference South title and were given the No. 9 seed in NorCal. The Seahawks (16-10) will play at No. 8 Columbia (17-7) on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner of that game advances to play either top-seeded CCSF (28-1) or the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between Monterey Peninsula College (15-13) — which tied for third in the Coast Conference South — and West Hills (18-7).

No doubt, Cabrillo will be motivated to get a rematch with CCSF after falling to the Rams by just four points in a regional final last year.

The top four teams advance to the state championship, scheduled for March 8, 10 and 11 at Ventura College.
