Clyde's Conner Long continues his football career at Concordia. He's joined at his announcement by Clyde athletic director and assistant coach Ryan Greenslade, Kennedi Long, Kade Long, Fliers coach Ryan Carter, Jen Long and Ray Long.

Think safety first.

Conner Long is one of the best defensive backs in the history of Clyde’s football program.

“He’s the type you can’t replace,” Fliers coach Ryan Carter said. “He’s one of the all-time greats at that position. He started as a freshman and continued to grow his entire career.”

Long, who continues his career at Concordia University, earned all-Ohio status his final two years. He was also a four-year starter on offense.

“We moved him around as an offensive weapon,” Carter said. “He did everything for us offensively as far as positions.”

Long played running back, wide receiver and quarterback on offense. Playing on offense made him a better defender.

Clyde's running back Conner Long (1), left, celebrates scoring a touchdown with Braydi Clark (34).

“It helped me learn what offensive guys tend to look for and gave me a step up when I went against them,” he said. “The biggest way I’ve improved is really taking in what my coaches have to say and using it on the field along with the hard work in the weight room.

“I’m well suited at safety because I can read offenses and fly around and make plays, not only in the secondary but also at the line of scrimmage.”

Long wasn’t ready for his life without football as a player.

“I’m excited to get to play an extra four years,” he said. “They have an up-and-coming program and a great coaching staff that genuinely cares.”

Long’s father, Ray Long, is Clyde’s defensive coordinator. Ray Long and brother, Chad Long, were standouts at linebacker.

“Even with all the accomplishment we’ve made as a team, my best memory as a Flier would be having the chance to play with my brother (Kade) as a freshman,” Conner said. “I’d like to thank all the coaches, teammates and fans that have supported me throughout my high school career.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without you guys. Once a Flier, always a Flier.”
