How To Choose The Right Protection For Your Kids’ Heads

You would never dream of sending your son or daughter out on a bike without head protection. But is the helmet he or she dons giving the right level of protection? Not all helmets are created equal! Be sure you’re buying the best helmet for your child’s safety by following these three tips.

  1. Check the label. The most important thing to check when buying a helmet is its safety standard. Helmets that meet the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have been thoroughly tested. You can tell if a helmet is CPSC-approved by checking the inside for a label.
  2. Buy new. Although it can be tempting to take a hand-me-down helmet or pick one up at a used sportswear shop, it’s not a good idea for your child’s safety. Older helmets, especially those that have been in a crash, can offer reduced protection. On that note, it’s best not to donate your used helmets.
  3. Choose the right type. As long as the helmet has a CPSC label, both hard-shell and soft-shell helmets offer the right level of protection. It really comes down to preference. Soft-shell helmets are more lightweight, and might be preferred by kids who are often tempted to skip the helmet. Hard-shell helmets are more durable, better for rough-and-tumble kids.
  4. Get a good fit. When your child tries on a helmet, make sure it sits squarely on top of his or her head. It shouldn’t tip back or forward. Ensure the chin strap can adjust for a secure fit.
