Julia Reyes Taubman, MoCad Founder, Loses Battle To Cancer

Bloomfield Hills Photographer, Arts Patron And Co-Founder Of MoCad Dies At 50 After Fighting Cancer.

Julia Reyes Taubman, one of the founders of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MoCAD), died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018. Reyes, 50, who rose to national prominence in 2012 with her book “Detroit: 138 Square Miles,” died at home in Bloomfield Hills after battling cancer.

Taubman’s 2012 book, a collection of photographs she took of blight in the city, was an effort seven years in the making. In addition to her photography, Taubman was heavily involved in the arts in Detroit and helped found and remained board chairman of MoCAD. Taubman also served on the board of governors at Cranbrook and had previously served as aboard member at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
