Tom Kontak has 109 wins as Oak Harbor's coach.

Tom Kontak averages 18 victories a season with 109 as Oak Harbor's coach.

He earned the 200th win of his career Tuesday with a 55-42 victory over visiting Vermilion in the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division.

"The administration six years ago — Drew Grahl and Keith Thorbahn — took a big chance on me and I appreciate that," Kontak said. "The opportunity to try to make a difference. I've enjoyed the people. We've been able to maintain a high standard of play."

Oak Harbor's Tom Kontak has 200 career wins as a coach.

Kontak is 109-30 with the Rockets. Prior to coaching at Oak Harbor, Kontak was 91-44 at Genoa.

"I share it with people I care about," Kontak said of his 200 career wins. "We've been fortunate to have very good players and great coaches with high standards. People have embraced that."

Chris Rawski was an assistant at Genoa, and Art Eli and Mark Boukissen at Oak Harbor.

"All bring different characteristics to the table," Kontak said. "Nobody outworks Chris. Bo is the Godfather. He makes sure the kids are loose and smiling. He's a great ear to bend. Art's the most passionate person anybody around has met.

"He's a basketball-mind genius. If your'e going to be successful in anything you do, you have to surround yourself with good people. We're not always right. But the consistency says something is going right. "

Tom Kontak averages 18 wins a season at Oak Harbor.

Oak Harbor scored 14 straight points Tuesday in the fourth quarter to stretch a five-point lead to 55-36.

"He definitely holds you accountable," said Rockets junior Logan Harris, who scored the 1,000th point of her career Tuesday. "It's structured and I'm a big fan of structure. It keeps me on the right track. I push and he pushes more."

Kontak hopes his imprint on a program is encapsulated by passion, accountability and team play.

"Xs and Os are next," he said. "It's all about the culture and the people. I want them to care so much to defend the logo on the front of their jersey. I want you to be passionate about success and hold yourself accountable and responsible for what you do."
