Robotic-assisted surgery at Adena offers better outcomes and fewer side effects

Adena Health System
: Thanks to robotic-assisted technology like the da Vinci X Systems, patients are seeing faster recovery and fewer side effects from surgery.

Faster recoveries, smaller scars and less pain – these are some of the many enticing reasons why surgeons and patients around the world are opting for robotic-assisted surgery, which enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with ease.

This new and exciting technology is now offered in Chillicothe at Adena Health System, where surgeons provide patients with the same advanced procedures generally found in larger cities. Robotic-assisted surgical systems, like Adena’s da Vinci X and da Vinci Xi, turn a traditional incision that could be six inches or longer into several half-inch incisions, a much less intimidating option for those who worry about scarring, or even taking that initial first step of getting surgery.

Though it uses the term robotic, surgical systems like da Vinci are completely controlled by a surgeon and don’t operate on their own. A surgeon uses a magnified 3D high-definition system to control tiny instruments during the procedure, which offer more precise control than a human hand. This, in turn, can result in better outcomes and fewer side effects for patients.

“The Da Vinci Xi system is the latest generation of robots that allows for more complex procedures, such as anti-reflux surgery, small bowel and colon surgery, and hernia to be performed in a minimally invasive fashion,” said Dr. W. Bill Sever of Adena Surgery. “Ninety-plus percent of my operations are now performed robotically, which has drastically decreased the need for a hospital stay.”

A wide range of procedures for a variety of conditions can be completed via the da Vinci Systems: surgeons at Adena can utilize it for a hysterectomy, prostatectomy, gallbladder surgery, Nissen (to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease) and hernia surgery. They can also utilize it for a lobectomy and wedge resection, pyeloplasty (to remove blockages in the urinary system), kidney removal and colon resection.

Does faster recovery time and less pain sound appealing to you? Talk to your doctor to find out whether you may be a good candidate for surgery using the da Vinci System at Adena. Remember, all surgeries involve risk of major complications – before you make a decision, discuss and consider various treatments to weigh out pros and cons of each.
