February 2018 will mark a quite incredible celebratory anniversary for one member of the Marshfield Band, as second trombonist Derrick Ruddell will notch up 70 years of unbroken service to the organisation.

Marshfield was formed in 1934 with a few village members, but suspended activities during the Second World War. It was revived in 1948, with Derrick in its ranks.

Privilege

Band Secretary Sarah Johnson said told 4BR: "During the course of the past 70 years Derrick has remained a valued and much loved member of the band — as well as being a great supporter and helper to others.

His loyalty and love of banding has always shone through and we have been privileged to have had him as a member."

Family ties

Derrick, along with his late wife Beryl, brought up two children in the village. His daughter, Sandra helped with events with Beryl while his younger son, Stephen, joined the band at the age of 8 in 1962 and is still playing!

Sarah added: "Throughout life's trials and tribulations Derrick has maintained that the band has kept him going. Despite the loss of his wife, his love of music and the companionship of his friends in the band, especially in the pub afterwards has given him and us so much joy."

Solo spot

On New Year's Eve Derrick turned 95 and, as always, he celebrated in style and on the 24th February the band will celebrate with a concert in his honour, where Derrick is planning to play a solo on this evening.

The concert will be at Marshfield Community Centre starting at 7.30pm with the Marshfield Male Voice Choir.
