Harry Potter RPG features familiar faces — but not Harry’s

The Boy Who Lived takes a back seat

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, a role-playing game based on the book series and headed to iOS and Android later this year, gives players the chance to live out their own Hogwarts adventures. And while fan-favorite characters will appear throughout their years at Hogwarts, there will be some notable absences from the school: Harry Potter and his crew.

Hogwarts Mystery takes place “in the time between Harry Potter’s birth and his enrollment at Hogwarts, when Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley were students,” according to Jam City, the game’s developer. So while Harry Potter will be alive in the Wizarding World at the same time as your own witch or wizard, he won’t get in the way of your own experience.

Instead, you’ll get to interact with characters like Hagrid, Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall, some of the most memorable characters in the series. Other parts of the game include Hogwarts’ four houses, which players will be sorted into; choosing a pet; learning how to cast a number of spells in beloved classes; and uncovering the myriad mysteries of Hogwarts. (Players also get to embark on something called “relationship quests,” which should satisfy lifelong Potter ’shippers.)

Portkey Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s own Harry Potter-focused label, will publish the game sometime later this year. Watch the first teaser above to whet your appetite for the first-ever Harry Potter game where you can create your own character.
