MUKILTEO — Dan Mack has stepped down after 20 seasons as Kamiak High School’s head football coach, the school announced Wednesday afternoon.
Mack, a 2015 inductee into the Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, compiled a 124-83 career record as Kamiak’s coach. He guided the Knights to the Class 4A state playoffs four times, including three quarterfinal appearances and a semifinal trip in 2000.
“Dan has served Kamiak High School’s football program, student-athletes, and the community of Mukilteo with distinction for the past 20 seasons as Kamiak’s head football coach,” Kamiak athletic director Sean Monica said in a press release.
“Not only has Kamiak football been tremendously successful on the field for the last 20 seasons, but under Dan’s leadership, the program has been instrumental in developing boys into men of character and integrity. Coach Mack has positively impacted thousands of young men and families.”
Mack has spent nearly four decades teaching and coaching in Mukilteo School District. Prior to his time at Kamiak, he was an assistant football coach at Mariner High School. He took over as head coach of Kamiak’s football team in 1998.
“I’ve coached football for 40 years in a row,” Mack said. “It’s time to hang up the cleats.”
The district plans to post the job opening soon, Monica said, and hopes to hire a new coach by May.
“The vacancy has already generated a lot of interest (because of) the tremendous foundation that Dan has built, and also because of Kamiak High School and the Mukilteo School District’s stellar reputation,” Monica said. “We are confident that we will have an excellent applicant pool to select from for our next football coach.”
The Knights posted a 1-8 record this past season, finishing 0-7 in Wesco 4A play.
