Driver escapes injury after car lands on frozen pond

No serious injuries were reported after a single-vehicle crash that ended with the car in a pond near North Christy Chapel Road and Ohio 163 in January 2018.

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP - An elderly driver escaped serious injury after his car went off the road and landed atop a frozen pond in Portage Township.

The crash occurred near North Christy Chapel Road and Ohio 163  shortly after 11 a.m., according to authorities.

Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick said the elderly male driver had gone off the road and ended up on the pond, which was frozen due to the recent cold snap.

The sheriff's office did not identify the driver.

Witnesses near the scene were able to get the man out of the vehicle quickly.

No serious injuries were reported after a single-vehicle crash that ended with the car in a pond near North Christy Chapel Road and Ohio 163 on Wednesday.

According to James Dubbert, of Dubbert’s Outdrive, a business located across the street from where the incident occurred, three employees were able to immediately respond to the crash and help the man get out of the car.

Two of the employees who responded are also firefighters.

Ohio 163 was closed for about 30 minutes as authorities and a crew from Don’s Towing worked to remove the car from the pond.

Dubbert captured the scene following the incident in an aerial video taken from a drone and shared on Facebook.
