Paul Hollywood’s stollen this is not: Having snuck a peek at my dad’s recipe, this isn’t that either. It turns out he uses the old notes in the family book as a loose starting point, then swaps out half the fruits, doubles some, chucks in a bunch more flour (none of which he measures! the horror!), and compensates with double or triple the yeast. The end result is a bit more fruitcake than bread, but he also butters the loaves at every conceivable opportunity and his friends love it every year, so what does it matter?

Couldn’t replicate the recipe if I tried, as all family traditions go
